Review of the latest APPLE gadgets july 2010

APPLE is planning to release a 5.6 inch iPad

Apple has announced on 13th July that it is planning to launch iPad having 5.6 inch [ 14 cm ] and 7 inch [ 18 cm ] screens. The iPad is 9.5" tall by 7.5" wide by 0.5" thick — roughly the size of a standard pad of paper. The iPad is the newest device in Apple's family of touch-based computers. These iPads will be more useful for reading eBooks instead of multimedia.

The iPad can be viewed as simply a bigger, faster iTouch. Using the iPad is a tactile, intimate experience, as with the iPhone and iPod Touch before it. You directly manipulate the interface: tap icons and buttons, stretch and shrink images and web pages, drag objects around, all with your fingers, not with a proxy pointer like a mouse.
Hands On

A black bezel (margin) between each edge and the actual screen display offers a place for thumbs to hold the iPad without obscuring pixels.A single Home button graces the front. A power/sleep button is on the top edge. The volume and rotation-hold switches are on the top-right edge. A stereo headphone jack and microphone are on the top edge opposite the power button.

The audio output's sound quality seemed excellent. A single speaker opening to its right provides an outlet for two small, stereo speakers inside. The stereo effect is completely lost, but when docked, the iPad's sound reflects off a table surface and seems to spread out. Its speakers have excellent clarity, but they lack bass response.

The iPad provides a very nice interface for movies and TV shows purchased from the iTunes Store. The playback experience is excellent. The iPad's LED-lit IPS display has excellent contrast, black level and color saturation.
A dedicated YouTube app provides most of the same basic functionality as YouTube's website, except it's faster, easier to navigate, and ad-free.
Photos for iPad is pretty much the same in function as it is on the iPhone and iPod Touch but with much nicer presentation. A grid of tiny icons are provided instead of albums. Photos are generously spaced and large enough to easily distinguish each photo.
iPad provides a calender application. The iPad's Calendar builds on the usability of the iPhone's calendar and has a very pleasant visual design.
According to the new reports, Apple has given new orders of iPad to Taiwan-based component makers for this year’s fourth quarter. These models of iPads include 5.6 inch, 7 inch and 9.7 inch screen. The 9.7 inch iPad has no camera and only little changes are done on the device.
This move by Apple is being compared to the original iPod which was launch to cut the competition by keeping its size smaller and its prices less expensive. Such devices were in demand from wider market due mainly to the lower prices and it served to enlarge the market share of the company. But reports are that Apple is unlikely to switch to OLED panels in smaller iPads as the penal supplier Samsung is unable to supply due to shortage .

iPhone 4

iPhone 4 is Apple's most successful launch yet, despite some bumps on the road. iPhone 4 is doing its best - with features like a super-fast A4 CPU, a new front-facing camera and five megapixel shooter on the back, a completely new industrial design, and that outrageous Retina Display.

Design

Steve Jobs likened the design of the iPhone 4 to that of a "beautiful, old Leica camera". It is curved, plasticky, silver-bezeled, glassy look of the iPhone 3G and 3GS. The phone is noticeably thinner than the 3GS at .37 inches compared to .48 inches, but it weighs the same 4.8 ounces. The iPhone 4 is made up of three basic parts: two pieces of smooth, strengthened glass, and a stainless steel band which wraps around the sides, top, and bottom of the phone. It feels great in your hand, take a little time to get used to the lack of a rounded back if you're coming from the 3G. The glass on the front of the device is about 30 times harder than plastic.
The iPhone 4 has changed inside as well. Apple has used ARM Cortex-A8-based CPU. The RAM is doubled from 256MB to 512 MB. The models based on memory come with either 16GB($199) or 32GB($299). iPhone 4 is packed with a 802.11 Wi-Fi Radio, Bluetooth 2.1 and a quad band chip.
Camera
When it comes to cameras Apple is slow in innovation. 3GS gave a 3MP shooter with no flash. The iPhone 4 has come up with a 5MP camera at the back and a VGA camera in the front. It has more pixels in a smaller space. Apple's using a newer illuminated sensor that's more sensitive to light in addition to increasing those megapixel. It is flash enabled so taking photos at night is made easy. The A4 and iOS 4 combo have considerably increased the time it takes to snap pictures. Its got a 5X digital zoom, with basic On/Off of the flash.

As the video is concerned it has a 720p capture. Yet it's got that jellyvision, if you don't hold it steadily.
Features

iOS 4 the re-branded iPhone OS which boasts loads of new features, enables multitasking, a video calling feature, folders so you can organize your apps, enhanced Mail, and lots of other nips and tucks - both big and small - that refine the company's growing operating system. Additionally, Apple has ported the iPad's iBooks to the smaller screen. It created a new version of its popular iMovie just for the iPhone 4.

With multitasking enabled it allows
  • Run more than one application at a time.
  • Fast switching of applications.
  • Background GPS.
  • Playing audio on background.
  • Allows VoiP connections to stay active.
  • Task completion is fast.
Apple has now come up with video calling, Wi-Fi enabled in the phone and considering the range of the Wi-Fi connection.

Some of the key features:
  • 7 talk hours over 3G.
  • 6 browsing hours over 3G.
  • 10 browsing hours over Wi-Fi.
  • 10 hours with video.
  • 40 hours with music.
  • 300 hours on standby.
Display

Steve made a huge point about the science behind the technology during his keynote. iPhone 4 has come up with a LED backlit 960 x 640 IPS screen with high resolution and pixel density ->"Retina Display". The new display manages four times as many pixels compared to the previous iPhone 3GS display with 326 pixels per inch resolution in the screen. This iPhone 4 also has a new accelerometer to make 6-axis sensing, and an extra microphone for canceling out noise.

Overall

Its not just a phone. The combination of gorgeous new hardware, that amazing display, upgraded cameras, and major improvements to the operating system make this an extremely formidable package. Depends on the type of user and how you can differentiate an Android or a symbian based phone. You got the taste to handle the phone then you are up for it to grab. Well some prefer to use a hardware keyboard, this phone is definitely not for those.
